Women Warriors of the World
through the ages . . .
This particular page is here to help educate others about the existence of women warriors throughout the span of time, I was looking for clothes that a Medieval woman might wear and came across information that there were many women on the battlefields over the ages.
This was something that I was not aware of, as most of us only know of Joan of Arc and see her as an exception to the rule. Keep in mind this is only a partial list that I gleaned after many hours on the internet, hopefully my information is mostly correct. Human bias and error has always been an integral part of recorded history, so it goes.
In no way do the 99 names and groups on this list include all of the women warriors across time; we will never know all of their names. In my opinion there were and are average unrecognized women throughout the world who are warriors in their everyday lives- even though they might not be aware of it. The women on this list span the centuries and are from different continents, groups, countries and clans such as; Africa, Apache, Arabia, Cherokee, China, Egypt, England, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Persia, Pirates, Russia, Shoshone, Spain, Turkey, Vietnam, Viking, Wales and much more.
These women were brave, strong, determined and courageous; many were leaders of their people, military strategists, and inspiration to other warriors.
Often women dove into battle to protect their land, homes, ideals or families, the same reasons men did. I am also quite sure many times the act of going to war was not for any kind of nobleness at all, but that of greed, power or revenge.
Today women still take up arms against enemies, remember the women of the past and present and let us keep their spirits alive within our hearts!
