My Left Ear

This project began as an attempt to illustrate my left ear’s constant buzzing, screaming, clicking, pulsing, roaring, piercing and unrelenting white noise. The purpose is to help those around me understand why I have trouble hearing their words or sounds and their directional source. I saw something on TV where somebody said “it is hard to show sound” or something like that. I found that to be so true, I began with pictures of things that made a lot of noise, like tires on pavement, trucks, motorcycles, lawn mowers and so on. I wasn’t happy with any of the visuals that I was getting from these things, so I took a picture of my left ear. I started this painting using that picture and really did not like how that looked, so I put it aside to work on later.
I had been working on this outside in the summer of 2011 and at one point, when it was an ear, the easel and painting got blown down and rained on, I was so frustrated with it at that point that I left it that way for a while. What you see is the result of starting over with the same canvas. I sketched a little and struggled with the colors I wanted to use, and made another attempt. I mixed up a watery red and dripped it on the canvas to show bright, sharp slivers of painful piercing noise, this looked disturbingly like blood so I toned it down with a clear type pearl over it. I then finally called it finished.
All in all this was one of the most difficult works I have attempted as far as depicting the idea that I wanted to show. I thank God my right ear is not as bad! Gesso and acrylic on canvas, 20” wide x 16” high project finished November 9, 2011. $140
