Heaven
Earth
Hell
This project started as a very different idea that I might pursue in the future, but this is what I ended up with at this particular time. I wanted to show how something can be merged or related and a part of each other, even though they are completely different. This is an attempt to symbolize Christianity or spiritual conversion or maturity. Even though we might have accepted Jesus into our hearts we still have a past, a history that is part of us and cannot be separated while we are here on this earth. Jesus can make us pure, but while we are here on earth we are human and are susceptible to the influences of evil. Part of what I tried to illustrate is that although evil is around us and a part of our world, God, through Jesus, has overpowered and conquered it and given us a way out and a way to live eternally in heaven with Him.
The heaven area is on the top right, earth on left and hell at the bottom. Note the heaven area is the largest and seems to be overtaking the other two, soon to be covering all, (as Jesus covers our sins). I used materials to symbolize each area, decaying barbed wire for hell, brown ribbon for earth and pristine white shiny string for heaven. These materials join near the center of the piece, entwine together and disappear into the center of a trefoil. I used the trefoil to represent the trinity, with white inside to show the holiness and purity of Jesus. On the trefoil outlines I used red to symbolize Jesus’ blood, green for the triumph of life over death and purple for the royalty of God.
Gesso and acrylic on wallboard, with barbed wire, brown ribbon and white string, approximately 18.5” high x 29.5” wide x 11” deep, project finished December 11, 2011. $200
