Read Me (IXOYE)
This painting began after I saw an episode of a show on TV called Covert Affairs. One of the characters on the show is blind and in his apartment was a completely white painting with Braille dots on it. The Braille words were love, love. I was excited to see someone show the fact that blind people also love art. I wanted to make something that could be read by touch and seen with the eye as well.
I began the painting on wall board with layers of gesso, making quite a bit of texture as I went. I envisioned the Braille dots as being beautifully smooth and perfect as the bottom of a coke can. But in my impatience to complete the painting I would not wait for the floor leveler to set up in the molds and placed them on the painting while they were too wet. Of course they came out as you see, rough and full of my finger marks as I molded them with my hands. Not my original intention, but it was fun! I chose to paint the Braille with silver paint.
I wanted to put Jesus in a painting and thought this would be an effective way to do so without actually writing Jesus. Although it ended up I did write Jesus anyway. The Braille reads Jesus and the Greek letters mean Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. The color symbolism is; purple- royalty; blue- heaven and/or truth; white/silver- purity; green- life over death. This piece is one of mine that I display often in the narthex of our church- Christian Church of the Cumberlands (Disciples of Christ).
I originally was not going to explain the Braille or the Greek to anyone and let them “Read Me”, as in the name of the painting. Work includes floor leveler, gesso and acrylic on wallboard, 34" wide x 12" high and was finished October 2010. $170
