Artist's Hands
This project began as an idea to use StyrofoamTM and mailing tubes as a way to hold my brushes. I wanted to make something sculptural and useful and funky and not try to make it look like anything else in particular. I also thought I might as well make it with red and black because that’s what I like. I painted this with a technique in mind that I had come up with when I was a teenager, I will probably do a project with this actual method at some point in the future.
I cut and placed the tubes where I wanted them with some effort adjusting the edges to pierce the StyrofoamTM a little for a more secure fit. I used Aleene’s tacky glue to adhere the tubes to the foam (this is also an experiment to see how well this glue works in this application). So far it has worked much better than I hoped, I was expecting to have to reinforce the tubes somehow, but after handling it so much during construction and painting without the slightest movement or weakness, I decided to leave it with glue only.
This was a fun project and I expect it to be very useful to hold all my brushes and pallet knives as well. Gesso, acrylic, StyrofoamTM and cardboard mailing tubes, approximately 22.5” wide x 11” high x 15” deep- project finished December 23, 2011. NFS
