I wanted to try something completely abstract, without a lot of planning, and fun! This is the result of that endeavor. I started with a plain canvas and fairly fluid acrylic paint and a credit card as my brush. I enjoyed applying the paint and twisting and dragging the card to make the paint move across the canvas. The colors are not exactly random, I choose what seemed to go well together and still be bright to help convey movement and motion.
I have worked with abstracts before and still am dismayed by how difficult an abstract work really is. You would think that something that looks random and thoughtless would be very easy to accomplish, it’s not that easy for me to do.
After I thought I had enough paint on the canvas I left it alone for a while and concentrated on something else. Later, I came back to it with the thought there was something more it needed, something like a background wash perhaps. This is what I did and was happy with the results, even though it still seemed it needed something. I left it again and finally it dawned on me that maybe a little pen detail would give it that completeness I was looking for. I added the pen near edges of contrast and this satisfied me by giving it a little depth and dimension and gave me that feeling that it was now finished.
Painting is acrylic and pen on canvas, 10” wide x 8” high and was one of my last completed in 2010. $35
