Anguish
This is from an old idea I found when straightening my studio. I wanted to do it on canvas but could not come up with a frame that would stretch the material the way I wanted it. StyrofoamTM seemed to be the best solution to the problem. I glued pieces together to get the thickness I needed then sculpted and sanded (with a small piece of foam) to get the final shape I wanted.
My intent was not to represent any object or recognizable shape, but to try to represent the feeling, the despair and deepness of pain. Originally this project would have been titled “Pain”, but I changed this to “Anguish” to make it’s meaning a little more clear to my line of reasoning. I thought it interesting that this very old idea had red, black and white in it, showing me that I have liked this combination of colors for many years.
Gesso and acrylic on StyrofoamTM, approximately 25 1/2” wide x 16” high x 6” deep, project finished November 16, 2011. $190
